With the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns putting a dent in retailers’ plans (and profits) last year, rumour has it that this year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are going to be bigger than ever. We took a look at Black Friday recently so let’s turn our attention to Cyber Monday, and see what we can expect this year.
The Origins of Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday was first coined as a term in 2005, when e-commerce analysts
noted that there had been a surge in shopping on the internet on the Monday
after the American Thanksgiving holiday. It seems a bit quaint now but it seemed
that people had to wait to return to work to use their high-speed connections at
work to shop! Wi-Fi and E-commerce were both in their infancy.
Since then, both Cyber Monday and Black Friday have grown into massive retail events. Although centred around an American public holiday, the end effect is the same; gearing up for Christmas gift giving.
