Tax-related Scams to Watch Out For

Many of us dread tax season, but there are definitely two groups who enjoy this time of year; accountants and scammers. Anxiety has a tendency to accompany this time of year; even when you are pretty sure you have done everything right, we are all prone to that nagging doubt that we might have made a mistake somewhere. Cyber-criminals seize this opportunity annually to exploit our anxieties around tax, and implement opportunistic attacks hoping to make some cash from their victims. In fact, last year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) detected more than one million reports of suspicious contact, and statistics show that tax-related scams have continued to rise, roughly doubling in the tax year from 2020 to 2021. It is highly likely that this trend will persist further this year.
